New Glasses

Got new driving glasses today. I currently have driving glasses, computer glasses and reading "cheaters"...Can't wait until they come up with a lens I can just adjust with an app. Spider bite on my arm...hopefully the red patch doesn't spread. Sox lost last night...better luck next year.

Fell asleep listening to a podcast...ended up having some strange haunted dreams...Woke up to see my bedroom door slowly opening on its own...It was because the AC had kicked on and just air moving through the house, but those few seconds of confusion were weird and wonderful until I could laugh at it...apparently fright makes me feel alive...

Halfway There: My 2024 Reading Recap (and What's On the Nightstand)

Man, I swear the year just flew by, but looking back at my reading list, I guess I've managed to put a decent dent in the stack of books waiting for me. Between worrying about DoD RIFs, seeing Phish, and trying to keep up with Patty, finding time to just sit down and get lost in a story is important, ya know?

Here's a look at the dozen books I've ripped through so far this year, from the music bios that scratch that itch to the historical epics that keep me up late.

The Groovy Corner: Jam Bands, R.E.M., and the Music That Matters

I guess the musical theme really stuck with me this year. It was nice to dive deep into the scenes that shaped me.

1. The Name of This Band Is R.E.M. by Peter Ames Carlin

   This biography is fantastic—an in-depth look at how four eccentric college friends from Athens, Georgia, became the voices of a generation. It’s a great cultural history of the late 80s and 90s rock scene and how the guys stuck together, even when things got nuts. Really made me appreciate their whole journey.

2. Your Song Changed My Life: From Jimmy Page to St. Vincent... by Bob Boilen

   NPR's Bob Boilen (from All Songs Considered and Tiny Desk Concerts) interviews 35 artists about the *one* song that flipped a switch and made them grab an instrument. It was a cool blend of musical memoir and deep interviews. It reminds you how much power a simple tune can have when you're 13 or 14.

3. This Has All Been Wonderful: A Travel Monologue from Summer 1994, the Year Phish Became Phish by David Steinberg

   If you're into the Phish scene, this is an essential read. It’s a road diary from the pivotal summer of '94, right before the band went from small theaters to arenas. Steinberg captured that pre-cell phone, pre-ubiquitous internet energy of following a band across the country. Reminded me of my own time on the road.

4. Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the '90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene That Followed by Mike Ayers

   An oral history, straight from the source, about the rise of **Phish**, Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, and the whole crew. It really nails how these bands built a successful DIY counterculture that totally flew under the mainstream radar, keeping that Grateful Dead ethos alive and setting the stage for things like Bonnaroo.

Getting Weird: Sci-Fi, Magic, and Mad Scientists

My brain always needs a good dose of the weird and wonderful. These definitely delivered.

5. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams

   Adams proves once again he's a genius. **Dirk Gently** is a detective who solves crimes based on the "fundamental interconnectedness of all things." It's got everything: a ghost, time travel, a ridiculously stuck sofa, and an Electric Monk who thinks the world is pink. Utterly absurd and brilliant—though I admit, the ending was a little *too* holistic for my taste.

6. Anima Rising by Christopher Moore

   Moore is my go-to for hilarious chaos. This one is set in 1911 Vienna where painter **Gustav Klimt** finds a mysterious nude woman (who might be the Bride of Frankenstein) floating in the Danube. He seeks help from Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung as she recalls her arctic past and being chased. It's as wild and funny as it sounds.

7. Aurelia by Stephen R. Lawhead

   A solid piece of historical fantasy, setting the stage for the King Arthur legend. It follows **Aurelia** in the time when the Romans bailed on Britain, leaving chaos behind. She has to raise her sons, Aurelius and Uther (yep, *Uther*), with help from Merlin, to figure out what kind of world comes next. Lawhead always brings the depth.

8. A Darkness Returns by Raymond E. Feist

   The first book in his new Dragonwar Saga, this is classic Feist and a huge crossover, connecting his Firemane Saga with the original Riftwar Cycle. The main character, Hatu, is dragged to Midkemia and has to get serious about his magic because there are dark forces—like the Church of the One and literal beings from the Void—coming for everyone. Great, sprawling epic fantasy.

Sometimes you need a story that grapples with real-world issues, past or future.

9. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

   This book was a gut punch. Set during the Dust Bowl in 1934 Texas, it tells the story of **Elsa Martinelli**, a woman who has to choose between fighting for her dying land or taking her family west to California, becoming an "Okie." It's a raw, emotional look at the depths of the Great Depression and one woman’s incredible resolve.

10. The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century's Greatest Dilemma by Mustafa Suleyman

    A serious and frankly, a bit unsettling, look at where **AI and synthetic biology** are taking us. Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind, lays out the "containment problem"—how do we keep control over these insanely powerful technologies? It's a must-read if you want to understand the next 10 years, and it definitely had my inner security professional glued to the pages.

11. The Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown

    The latest **Robert Langdon** novel. You know the drill: symbology, history, ancient conspiracies, and a frantic race across an old European city—this time, Prague. Langdon has to find his colleague, Katherine Solomon, who disappeared right before publishing a book that would disrupt everything we think we know about human consciousness. Fast-paced, as always.

12. Circle of Days by Ken Follett

    I'm just getting into this one, and I'm already hooked. Follett always delivers on the sweeping historical scale, and this book tackles one of the greatest mysteries: **Stonehenge**. It’s set during the time the monument was being built, following a flint miner and a priestess who share the vision for the great stone circle. Seems like it's going to be a classic Follett epic about humanity, war, and engineering against a dramatic historical backdrop. Looking forward to losing myself in this one over the next few weeks.

Just rambling

Got my covid, flu and pneumonia shots today. Hoping I don't have any side effects. I assume if I try this next year I'll be labelled a criminal. Sad what's become of our country. Made grilled chicken tikka and rice for dinner...my mouth still feels it, but I also feel happy. Sooo good. 2nd only to the Brisket Mac-n-Cheese Bombs I had at Jim 'N Nicks while visiting Julian and Ashley last week as the best foods I've eaten this month. I plan on making braised beef short ribs Sunday, so that should round out the top 3. Hoping the Sox can get a win and make the post-season tonight. Last 3 games are against Detroit and could go either way...fingers crossed. Hitting ISC2 Security Congress in Nashville at the end of October. Last year's actually motivated me in my career field and I'm hoping for more of the same. Last year I was in Vegas and I got to enjoy the strip along with seeing my old friend Charissa. Will be seeing her and her son who recently switched to cybersecurity at this year's event. I have a goal to make a friend that I stay in contact with throughout the year at this one...actually a bit of big step for me.

September 2025 recap

Got a new car. I'd driven my Kia Sorento for 11 years and it was time. Was originally thinking of a 4 Runner, but realized me getting a car meant Patty would also want a car, so I settled on a Rav4 Hybrid. Getting about 40mpg right, so no complaints there. Also nice that I can finally get all the SiriusXM stations (Kia was limited due to an older model receiver in the car).

Went do Atlanta and got to see Julian and Ashley*. Saw Phish. 1st night I bowed out early because I just wasn't gelling with the setlist. 2nd night was great. Nice to hang with friends Jackie and Mark as well. I also got to meet/see some of .net folks while I was down there. Did a hike with JandA and ended up falling and will now have scar on my left knee for the forseable future. Did another hike with Rob and Jason from .net. Very enjoyable as Rob is from the area and always finds interesting places.

Siding on the house is finally finished and we've received all our payments from insurance (now time to look for new insurance company). Once again worried about future of DoD jobs et al. Not sure if a RIF is coming or not. I'm thinking with my amount of time in service I should be pretty well insulated, but you never know with these guys...Transcom is also funded via a working capitol group so we may be okay for a while... Patty is currently out of town. I'm schedule for covid,flu and pneumonia shots today...we'll see if I have energy to do any projects around the house after that.

*Juluan is my son via marriage to Patty, he and Ashley recently got married after several years of being together.

The son and heir of nothing in particular...

So in my last post I mentioned buying a new hot water tank...Happy to report you can now add air conditioner and furnace to that...well maybe not happy, but as with the water tank they were old and needing replacing...I don't even know what we'll need to do next to this house...

Patty lost her job recently.  She was actually kicking ass and the people that worked for her loved her, but the VP over her was quite frankly a bitch and thought Patty "wasn't a good corporate fit".  This is mainly due to Patty knowing more than said VP and also pointing out where they were doing some pretty sketchy things... So now we're trying to get her a job, or have her file chapter 13 or who knows what as she can handle her bills for another month or so, but then we're fucked.

Ginger is no longer with us.  She was a good dog, but never really felt like she was part of the family.  Patty did everything she could to find her a good home, but in the end we had to take her to local animal control.  We then received a call from the place we originally got her from.  They were pissed that we turned Ginger in, but when we had called the rescue they said "we don't have the space".  Patty has terrible allergies and Ginger was a large dog who shed quite a bit.  The other bad thing (in my mind) is that I had asked Patty not to get Ginger in the 1st place.  She got her when I was living in the apartment in Swansea but Ginger quickly became "my dog" even though I never wanted this particular dog.  I tried to be decent to her, but my way of being kind to animals is to not bring them into my house where I feel guilty if they don't get the care and life they deserve (much more I can say on this subject, but I'll move on for now...)

Some travel coming up...get to hit Minneapolis (actually Eagan, MN) next week.  Then I'm back home for a few days before heading off to Phish in Atlanta.  I get to stay in Atlanta for a week after as I'm taking a course to help get my Certified Cloud Security Professional.  Gonna see how the contract re-bid plays out and if we don't win, I'm hoping the new cert will land me a decent job...

Other things running through my mind in no order: where we're going to end up living, will I have enough for retirement, will I lose the weight I want to and other middle aged man thoughts...

Anyway, not even sure I know how to blog anymore...

The day I finally went insane...

First off, Happy New Year!  Okay, now that that's over I can vent about my experiences with Duluth Trading Co.  Tried to order Aidan some more pants after Christmas (he showed up here with only 1 pair of jeans that I ended up throwing out because they had a rip in the ass).  I placed the initial order for three pairs of pants.  When I received the conformation email I noticed they had Illinois vice Wisconsin as the ship to state.  The zip was correct and it probably would have made it there eventually....but just to be safe I sent an email correcting the state.  I received a message back stating that the order had been dropped from their system...great now I had to go and order it all again...I did.  And soon after received a message stating that two pairs of the pants weren't available any more (the price had already gone up when I placed the order the 2nd time) and that they wouldn't charge me for the items that were out of stock and they would just send the one pair....Sooooo I start looking at my credit card statement today and notice that not only do I have a charge for the one pair, but an additional charge for the full amount...I had already ordered more pants off Amazon at this point.  I emailed Duluth trading, they said I was wrong and contact credit card company...I did and put in a dispute (I currently have a refund showing as pending)...so you would think that's it...except that I changed the way my Gmail shows the messages from conversation format back to normal message format and found that I had a missing email from Duluth showing a shipment with 3 pairs of pants and a tracking number...I checked and it showed delivered yesterday.  I'm now waiting on Aidan to confirm just how many pairs of pants he's received over the last couple of days...I'm happy if he ended up with extra, but Duluth shouldn't have sent items for a cancelled order.  So anyway, at this point I'm almost hoping the 3 pairs didn't make it there so I can say "never received"....otherwise I'll have to call and correct with CC company...I can't believe the ordeal would be this draining...must be what middle age is...and I don't like it...


In other notes...Holidays went smooth.  Enjoyed have both boys here.  I started at the McKendrie Metroplex the other day.  So far I've only run on the indoor track and did an aqua fit class.  I'm going to run again today and I've got yoga tomorrow...should be interesting.  I also have a float set up for tomorrow thanks to Patty...and I might take myself to lunch after that at 1818 Chophouse thanks to Julian.


So if some confusion over a couple of pairs of pants is the worst thing that happens this year I won't be too disappointed. 


Well okay I also had to pay for a new water heater.  Both of ours went out.  Not really sure if they were both really broken, but they were both pretty old so I guess I'm glad we're now down to 1 tank.  It did leak out the top yesterday, but they were quick to come and seal it up...something you can't really tell if it's going to happen until you put some stress on the system, so no worries...nothing damaged.

My tip for the day...

If you're having problems with the key fob to your car and you've replaced the battery and it still doesn't work...check and make sure you put the damn battery in the right way.  Trust me, you'll be thankful you double-checked.

Quiet night in the house.  Julian and Ashley left yesterday.  Aidan slept in and played Zelda on my nintendo most of the day.  We're going to Dave and Buster's tomorrow for his last night.  Not my favorite place, but it's what he wants to do.  Wish I could say we bonded really well and had some great conversations while he was here, but that's just now how it's going.  Nothing going wrong, we're just not close.  He may need to grow some before we can find things to bond over...I can be patient.

Hands have been sore lately.  I hope it's not arthritis.  Patty already suffers from RA along with her fibromyalgia.  I need to schedule the floats Patty got me soon.

Listened to an episode of Security Now and watched The New Screen Savers (casted to my tv from the chromebook) today.  It was nice to here and see the old TechTv folks again.  I'm happy Leo has kept this going and I hope it continues for many years to come. 

Well, winding down and gonna read for a while before going to sleep.  I'm currently reading Under a Scarlet Sky.  Story of an Italian boy/man who works to help Jews escape Italy over the Alps during WWII.  I've heard they're going to make a movie of it, but glad I'm reading the book first.

Stream of thought

This isn't as much of a stream of thought as a "I need to work on my typing skills"...I've been away to long to have the thoughts go directly from brain to fingers...I'm slow right now, but hope to improve with the new chromebook...I'm also hoping that they update this damn thing quick so I can run Android apps on vice just Chrome Store stuff...

Good smells coming from the kitchen tonight.  Julian and Ashley are making fajitas.  Nice break from the abundance of beef based meals we've had over the holidays so far (exception being the butter chicken I made that was realllllly good).  I made meatballs on Christmas eve, and prime rib for Christmas dinner.  Both were "okay" by rating, but others seemed to enjoy.   Next year I think we're going to go simpler...If we're not in Mexico, then I'm going to be making stews that will not only fill the house with comforting smells, but allow folks to graze at their own pace.

Blood pressure has been really off this week.  I need to exercise and meditate soon and start working on getting it back down.  Patty got me a 4 pack of floats that I'm really looking forward to.  I love floating as a way to relax.  She did good.  I got her tickets for us to see Book of Mormon this spring.  I had already got her Game of Thrones live tickets for her birthday, and Hamilton tickets as a "just because" gift.  It's nice that we'll be able to get out and do things together.  Patty is also looking at getting us movie pass so that we can have another reason to get out of the house. 

I'm looking at getting a stand for my mountain bike (well actually a magnetic trainer) so that I can ride it in the garage on days when I don't want to leave the house...might even be able to bring it in the den some days and ride during work...I'm hoping I can get the treadmill settled somewhere and have it still be functional.  The blood pressure and the current pain in my hands (as well as my weight) has me scared about my health more than I've ever been and I want to correct it as much as possible.  Wish me luck.

Amber got engaged.  That was funny to hear, but I'm happy for her.  The "it's going to be a long engagement" text I got speaks both to her fear of commitment and possibly the fact that in some ways she's settling on this guy.  Her and I would have made a good couple if it had worked out, but I think each is now content with the direction our lives went...

Need to wrap it up for now...I really think I'll be able to do more of this now that I have a keyboard in my lap whenever I want one...

Thanksgiving 2017

Thought I was going away didn’t you?  Well I’m still here.  Thanksgiving was one of our most successful holidays yet.  Julian got a little drunk and obnoxious towards the end of Wednesday evening, but recovered quite well for the rest of the weekend.  No issues with food, nobody burned, no strange rashes….A good time was had by all…

Working on setting up a quick trip to Ft Campbell to get Windows 10 installed on one of my laptops…apparently this takes an act of god and approval from congress before it will happen.  I’m just looking forward to a day on the road without anything else to think about….

Back in a few, I have a meeting…

Well the meeting ran long…it was also somewhat pointless and could have been handled in a short email, but we decided to waste an hour instead…

Christmas gifts starting to arrive…I have this time of year.  I’m not opposed to gifts, I would just rather not have to reset my budget or lose ground in paying off bills each year because we decide to overspend.  I didn’t put any emotion or thought at all into Patty’s gifts this year (to be fair to myself I did get the Game of Thrones live tickets for her birthday and Hamilton tickets just because so I don’t feel too bad) I just went through her Amazon wishlist until I reached the budget I had set.  Aidan will be here this year (he may be calling himself Emrys, but I’m not willing to make that change).  I’m hoping to encourage him (and myself) to start exercising more.  He’s young and already in very poor shape.  That is a bit upsetting.  I don’t feel like we have a real father/son relationship…I feel like I’m more of an obligation he would be happier not dealing with…it may just be his age or his generation….

Still haven’t watched The Last Waltz yet…mostly a logistics issue.  I did manage to catch Planes, Trains and Automobiles a few times Thanksgiving day.  I live the idea of sticking to traditions…

Hard to get over here to the laptop and not have anyone else around at the same time…Guess my blogging may just become something I do to take a few minute break from work….

Got to see and catch up with Kami on Saturday.  It had been about 10 years since we last saw each other and it’s been 24/25 years since we were in Germany.  I still think of that time as my college days and have fond memories of my friends from that era in my life.

Front row seats to the end of the world…

I guess you can say that I’m too old for this shit.  We have an incompetent president and staff (who are systematically destroying every policy put in place by the previous administration), an opposing party that isn’t any better and a country that just doesn’t seem to give shit about fixing anything, they just want to bitch about how they were wronged by the other side….I don’t have a side I just look at the qualifications or the individual or the merit of the argument in question… Checking social media only makes me angry these days… I almost wish I could build an anachronistic town that is permanently stuck in the early 90’s…Life seemed so much simpler then.  The music was better for sure.  Anyway, I don’t want to get too negative right now…

I’m trying to get myself back into blogging…mostly so I have something to look back on a remember what life was like when I was younger (maybe try and capture the mood, spirit and events of my life in way that will accurately tell the story years from now when I look back)…I still go back regularly and read old post from 10+ years ago when I was still fairly active in blogging.  Blogging for the fun of writing seems to have gone out of style now…most blogs are political rants.

Favorite entertainment medium right now is podcast.  I love putting on one of my regulars when I get in bed for the night…something about the familiar voice that I find comforting.  Two favorites are Never Not Funny by Jimmy Pardo and The Chick McGee show.  I think Pardo has it down a little better (and makes regular updates) but Chick’s views on life resonate with me…

I feel like I don’t really live any more….not sure exactly when I died though…I still love music (bluegrass in particular of late), but I don’t have the desire to attend a concert or festival…Most of that stems from not having someone to go with.  Patty and I don’t really have the same taste in music.  At 44 I find it almost impossible to meet people I can be friends with who have enough similar interest.  I’m glad I’m with Patty, but I really wish I didn’t live in the Midwest…it’s depressing here. 

I need a hobby…I’ve never really gotten into anything.  I tend to lose interest once I learn the basics.  I think I might try astronomy though…I’ve always loved looking at the stars….maybe that will get me back into camping as well (they two seem to go hand in hand to me). 

Okay so this is day one of trying again…Not my best post over, not my worst.

Thanksgiving

OK, so it's Turkey day...mine is sitting in a tub of water right now. It was still a little frozen this morning, but seems OK now. I'll prep it and get it in the oven in a couple of hours. It's a small one, so should be good to go by this afternoon. Taking a break from trying to clean up my place. I get happy just thinking about Patty. When it comes to Christmas, Patty is getting the better end of the deal. I'm getting her the large size photo printer she wants, and an Ipod touch, and most of the Jane Austen movies she had on her wish list. A part of me sees me and Patty ending up together and being happy (at least on some level) together. We'll each have that other person out there who makes our collective hearts sing, but we'll comfort each other. We're also both mature enough to realize that you don't always get the fairy-tale ending in life.

Watching Joan Biaz sing on "The Last Waltz". It's one of my Thanksgiving traditions. I also like to listen to "Alice's Restaurant"...other than that, it's turkey, stuffing, mash potatoes and the rest of the usual food stuff. Will probably end up going to see the Twilight movie tonight. I started the 4th book last night. It hasn't received the best reviews, so I hope it doens't ruin the series for me....I also hope the movie does the first book justice.

Just remembering last Thanksgiving...I drove up from Panama City Beach to be with Patty and her mom and son....Patty burned her arm with gravy...not fun. Later (or possibly the next day) she broke out in hives...we think it may have been the pet carpet cleaner stuff...we had moved furniture around in her bedroom and she was crawling on the floor quite a bit as we did...anyway, she was miserable for a couple of days, but got better.

Was the Macy's parade always so lame? I remember loving it as a kid.

Rise from the dead

So it's been years...and well let's see what has changed...

I got out of the Air Force...maybe you already knew that. Moved to Detroit, but couldn't find a job. Got a call from Wynne and Brian down in Florida saying that they had a job for me... I thought about for a few weeks, and then decided I had to take it. At the time I was very concentrated on getting Aidan back with me. The job turned out to be very good. I lived in Panama City Beach form almost 3 years (I'll probably use another blog to fill you in on that). Then I moved here to O'Fallon, IL (near St Louis for anyone not willing to pull it up on Gooogle maps). I got a job that was satisfactory, but not anything to rave about. After the contract switched to a new company I did stay on, and I work with some very good people, who help make showing up every day worth it. I'll also use another post to try and cover everything that's happened since moving up here...like moving into one place, then moving into my own place...

So why am I back? I need a place to start putting my thoughts together again. I'm at a very confusing point in my life. I happened to stumble across my old blog and started reading it... I got nostalgic for how I used to keep things updated pretty regularly. I want to get back to that. I want to be able to look back years from now and have some sort of record of how my life went... This time around I would like to do it without many of the restrictions I use to put on myself... I would blog often, and just make comments on the day, and life with Aidan etc, but I would often edit myself based on who I knew would be reading...I don't want to do that any more. I've had good and bad things happen in my life. I've hurt others and been hurt. I've made others happy, and some have done that for me...so now as I begin my trial experiment of blogging again I will not hold back.

I'm at a point where I'm feeling pressure to know what it is I really want in life, and to set myself on the path that will most likely help me to get it. I'm probably the only one who that will be interesting to, but who cares? I'm not advertising that this blog even exist any more. I'm just going to use it as my journal and keep living my life. I'll also put in the light, weird, neurotic thoughts that cross my mind like I used to...just because I can still make myself laugh, and hope that I always will...

OK, it's almost 11. I'm sleeping at Patty's tonight. I wish she knew how much I just enjoy having her next to me...

Going Private

I've been re-reading my post from the last year or so. They provide a quick glimpse into what I was doing, but lack any emotion, and fail to capture the scope of my thoughts on many levels. The reason for this I feel is that I was posting for an audience (a small one). I hold things back to avoid confusion, anger, whatever. I was trying to please everyone, and the result is that I don't really have anything to go back and see what kind of person I really was/am. So, I'm going to make sure I capture everything I have hear and save it off to disk, then I'm going to get rid of this site and just do a private journal on my laptop. I don't think a public forum is the right place for the type of writing I want to do. Farewell and you can always keep in touch via email.
